Virgil retired from the Gardner Baking Company in 1990 after 39 years of service. He moved to Florida in 1997. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Kissimmee, Florida; a son, Michael (Linda) Gilman of Naperville, Illinois; a daughter, Kathleen (Charles) Messer of Thousand Oaks, California; two grandchildren, Julie Gilman of Chicago and Benjamin Gilman of Naperville, Illinois; his mother, Mae Gilman of Viroqua; three brothers, Earl Jr. (Arlene) Gilman and Pete (Shirley) Gilman; and four sisters, Iva Lea (Edward) McCollough, Shirley (Mac) Marshall, Sharon (Art) Lee and Deanna (Arlen) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Sr. and infant twin sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 13, 1998 at Peace United Methodist Church in Richland Center. Rev. Russell Frees officiated with interment in the Manning Cemetery in Vernon County. Visitation was Monday evening at the Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center. Virgil L.
