MERRIL F. SMITH, 79, of Huntington, passed away Monday, May 26, 2003, at St. Marys Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Reger Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Hamlet Don Smith and Pastor Jerry Matt. Burial will be in the Smith-Riggs Family Cemetery, Buffalo Creek Road, Wayne County, W.Va. He was born June 25, 1923, in Shoals, W.Va., a son of the late Hamlet and Caroline Virginia Hutchinson Smith. He was a retired supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service. He was also a member of Grace Gospel Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Louise Robinson Smith; six brothers, Clifford, Pascal, Sankie, Golden, Ernest and Walter Lee Smith; and one sister, Nellie Haynie. Survivors include a daughter, Norma Vinson; two grandsons, Mike Vinson and his wife Amanda, and Brian Vinson; one great-grandson, Noah William Vinson; two brothers, Col. James C. Smith and Clair S. Smith, and many nieces and nephews. Merril was a wonderful father who reared his grandsons as if they were his own. The Marine Corps League Detachment 340 of Huntington, of which he was a member, will serve as pallbearers. American Legion Post 93 of Kenova will fire three volleys at the graveside.
