He died on 23 Mar 1981, at age 65, in De Soto, Vernon County, Wisconsin, USAG. Percy Guy Sandwick died suddenly Monday afternoon, March 23, 1981 of a heart attack at his home in Redmound. He was 65 years and 19 days. He was born on March 4, 1916 in Freeman Township, Crawford County to Thomas and Eva (Rolfe) Sandwick. He was baptized and confirmed at De Soto Lutheran Church. On June 24, 1935 he married Hope DeLap in Viroqua. They farmed for several years and for the past twelve years operated a filing station in Redmound. Percy had been chairman of Wheatland Township for 30 years, served on the Vernon County Board for twenty years and on March 21, 1981 was elected to the Board of Directors of the Vernon Electric Cooperative. He was a charter member of the Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department. He had also served on the Redmound Creamery Board, Redmound School Board and the De Soto Lutheran Church Council. He is survived by his wife, Hope, two brothers, Lenwid (Sam), De Soto; Lee Francis (Joe) Sacramento Calif., one sister, Mrs. Annetta Bolstad, Ferryville, a niece, Mrs. Derold (Myrna) Grimsled, Madison, who made her home with them for several years, other nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Maynard, his parents, three brothers, Ernest, Marion, Harold, and two sisters, Mrs. Inez Suiter and Mrs. Esther Emerson. Blessed be his memory. Funeral services were held Friday, March 27th at the DeSoto Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Private committal services will be held later, in the Victory Cemetery. The Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua was in charge of arrangements. Vernon County Museum Obituary file Friends Recall Humorous Man Percy Sandwick of Redmound filled each moment of his life with purpose, humor and service to community and friends. Many of those who knew Sandwick spoke of a fond memory or a particular aspect of Sandwick's personality that formed a composite of a warm and energetic man. Sandwick died Monday at the age of 65. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. in the DeSoto Lutheran Church. One resident, when asked what came to mind when she thought of Percy Sandwick, said, "Playing cards in his store and always cracking a joke. He was funny." Sandwick operated a filling station in Redmound, rural De Soto, for the past 12 years. Edwin Swenson, a friend of 25 years, described Sandwick as a man with a wonderful personality, "A prince of a guy." Swenson also pointed to Sandwick's position as chairman of the Wheatland Town Board for 31 years as evidence of his integrity and ability to get along and work with others. In addition to Sandwick's 20 years on the Vernon County Board and his recent appointment to the board of the Vernon Electric Cooperative, Swenson recalled how instrumental Sandwick was in the creation of Blackhawk Park north of DeSoto along Hwy. 35. The park's Percy's Island was named after Sandwick. Sandwick and Swenson, as well as friends for years, were co-workers on the Vernon County Soil and Water Board and spent a great deal of time buying easement rights for the Redmound area. In passing, Sandwick leaves behind a record of service. Those who knew him best say he leaves many loved ones and friends who will continue to carry fond memories of a man who touched their lives with warmth, humor, and a dedication to make the lives around him as important as his own.
