Karl Vernon DeLap, age 75 of Viroqua, died Tuesday afternoon, June 30, 1998 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. He was born in Viroqua March 5, 1923 to Reuben and Julia (Baumgartner) DeLap. He gradauated from Viroqua High School in 1942 and then served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee from October, 1943 until April 1946 where he was stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. January 8, 1946 he married Jeannette Schaldach in Viroqua. Karl and his brother, Bernard "Bunny" owned and operated DeLap Oil Company from 1946 until 1979. He was a member of the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Viroqua, a life member of Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032 and a life member of Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138. In loving remembrance of Karl. Karl is survived by his wife, Jeannette, two sons, Kal and Jerry (Diane); a daughter, Jan (Jeff) Amundson; a grandson, Cyrus Amundson; four granddaughters, Nicole, Heather, Portia and Courtney DeLap; a brother, Bernard (Harriet) DeLap; two sisters, Ruth (Roger) Bayles and Lorraine (Connie) Hendrickson; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maurine Severson; and a brother, Dr. Kenneth DeLap. Funeral services were held Friday, July 3, 1998 at the English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Viroqua with Pastor Dennis Kempf officiating. The organist was Mary Colburn. Burial was in the Viroqua Cemetery with military rites by Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 and Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post No. 138. The bugler was Chad Walby. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Baumgartner, Mike Jensen, Jim DeLap, Ron Severson, Carl Hendrickson and Glen Warner. The Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua assisted the family.
