Hughes lived at Ceredo, Wayne County, where Mr. Hughes is a painter and paperhanger. My Mother says he was injured when he fell from a Church Tower he was painting. Walter Cyril Hughes, Phillip & Calie's son, followed his fathers trade, and was later killed when a scaffolding broke while painting Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1929. My Mother, Clara Elizabeth Hughes Mays Woolary Letton, says that her grandmother talked about her wedding day, she & Phillip Hughes were married, then having only thirty-five cents left, they bought a watermellon and sat down beside the road to eat it. My Mother was very close to her Grandmother who preferred to be called 'Calie', she says that California Elizabeth Riggs died the day before Thanksgiving (Abt. 1932) while my Mother was living at that time in Raceland, KY a few years after the death of her father. The family met early in the day at the home of her grandmother, where the body was resting prior to burial. My mother was left behind when everyone went elsewhere for Thanksgiving Dinner. My Mother said she could not consider leaving her grandmother in the house alone, despite she was very hungry. I am sure it was a very long, and very sad, Thanksgiving for her.
