CHARLES HOWARD FERGUSON, 83, of Wayne, W.Va., won his five-month battle with cancer and passed peacefully from this life to the next at his home, Sunday, December 7, 2003. A service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2003, at the Wayne Baptist Church, of which he was a member, by the Rev. Herbert Varney and the Rev. Keith Creasy. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery at Wayne. He was born May 30, 1920, at Fort Gay, W.Va., a son of the late Curtis and Tokey Riggs Ferguson. Charles was a graduate of Fort Gay High School and the University of Kentucky. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from September of 1941 to October of 1945, and was a member of American Legion Post 93, which will conduct graveside rites. Charles worked as a right-of-way agent and property manager for Appalachian Power Company for 37 years prior to his retirement. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl M. and Pauline Ferguson, and three brothers, Raymond, Hubert and Elliott Ferguson. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jackson Ferguson; three daughters, Nola Franzke and husband Gary of Murrysville, Pa., Melanie Waddle and husband Carl of Wayne, W.Va., and Monica Rutherford and husband Jack of Winter Springs, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Katherine Shuhy and husband David, Joseph Franzke and wife Jennifer, Caroline Franzke, James Andrew "Jim" Waddle, Charles Michael "Charlie" Waddle, Meagan Rutherford, Morgan Rutherford and Zachary Rutherford; a great-granddaughter, Lilian Shuhy; two sisters, Phyllis Crabtree and husband Howard of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Sarah Maxine "Sally" Ferguson of Fort Gay, W.Va.; three brothers, Maxie L. Ferguson and wife June of Belle, W.Va., Henry Russell Ferguson and wife Jean of Crossville, Tenn., and Ralph Clinton Ferguson and wife Nina of Seville, Ohio; and two special nephews, Willis Ray Ferguson and wife Mary Sue and Larry Jackson and wife Mary, as well as several additional nieces, nephews and other loving family members.
