GARRETT "SPURGE" RIGGS, 77, of Ceredo passed on from his many worldly chores on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, in the St. Maryś Medical Center after a lingering illness. Garrett is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, the former Maude Lester of Lawrence County, Ky.; one daughter, Debra Leigh Boggess of Mechanicsville, Va.; and two grandchildren, Richard Garrett Boggess (21) and Sara Elizabeth Boggess (17). Additional survivors include seven brothers, twins Carl and Charles of Columbus, Ohio, Pat of Kenova, Dana of Virginia Beach, Ralph (deceased), Rev. Bernie Riggs of Kenova and Rev. Eustace Riggs of Alabama and three sisters, Maxine Ferguson of Kenova, Juanita Moore of Ashland, Ky., and Dorothy Pauley of Beckley, W.Va. Mr. Riggs was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rick Lee Boggess. Spurge attended C-K High School until 1944, when at the age of 17 the call of duty was heard and he left to join the U.S. Navy where he spent two years, most of which was in Japan. After his discharge, he joined the work force and eventually spent 30 years with the C&O Railroad from whence he retired following a serious injury. Garrett joined Post 93 of the American Legion 56 years ago and began a lifelong commitment of working with community projects in various organizations. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #110 of Kenova, whose members will perform graveside rites. He had attained several stations in the Lodge along with belonging to the Stoner Chapter #46 of the Royal Arch Masons in Kenova. He was a Kentucky Colonel and named 2003 Donor of the Year at the V.A. Hospital, where he spent hundreds of hours as a volunteer. Additional honors include American Legion Post 93 chaplain, The 3rd District Chaplains Spot, member of the Chapel of Four Chaplains for many years and winner of Department of WV Religious Emphasis awards for several years. One of his busiest duties was officiating over fallen veterans ́graveside rites. He performed more than 1,500 such ceremonies throughout the years. This Honor Guard will perform full Military Honors at the services. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Smith, Estil May, Paul "Judo" Dickerson, Donnie Powell, Junior Powell, Johnny Brown, Tom Hayes, George Sinkewitz, Jack Hardin, George Carter, Dave McComas and Jack Wilson. Garrettś nephews will serve as active pallbearers. "Spurge" will be sorely missed by the many people he put before himself in his many volunteer duties. If awards are passed out for humanitarian work, then Garrett will receive a wagon full. Services for Mr. Riggs will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Ceredo, with the Rev. Alan Sheriff and the Rev. Rodney Hale officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
