Biography

Andrew Burton Rooke was born on 5 Dec 1840 in Malden, Kanawha County, VirginiaG.1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11 He and Nancy E Harriman were married on 9 Jul 1867 in Kanawha County, West Virginia, USAG.3,11,12,13,12,11 He died on 4 Jan 1931, at age 90, in Cottonwood, Idaho County, Idaho, USAG.1,2,3,4,5,6
A. B. Rooke, Civil War veteran and pioneer rancher and hotel proprietor of Cottonwood, passed away at 5 a.m. today at his home here. He was 90 years old. A native of West Virginia, having been born at Malden, December 5, 1840, Mr. Rooke served in the Confederate Army throughout the war between the states as a member of Company I of the eighth Virginia cavalry and participated in virtually all of the major engagements. He was twice wounded, once severly, and his life was despaired of for several weeks. In 1867, two years after he was mustered out of the service, he was united in marriage to Miss Nannie E. Harriman, and after 12 years the family started on a drive from their West Virginia home across the plains to Idaho territory, landing at Cottonwood, then merely an outpost of civilization. The trip was made in a covered wagon drawn by horses and required months, and was fraught with much danger from the Indians. Reaching Cottonwood in 1879, Mr. Rooke took up a homestead near the then small settlement and lived there until 1894. Cottonwood's growth and the prominence Camas prairie had attained as a rich farming section and the heavy travel between Lewiston and the mines of Idaho county, pointed out to Mr. Rooke the advantage of building a hotel, resulting in the erection of St. Albert's, noted as a hostelry in those days and known to all pioneers. The disasterous fire occurring in Cottonwood in 1908 wiped out this property and Mr. Rooke then built the Rooke hotel, which he conducted until seven years ago, then retiring from active business. He leaves besides his widow three sons and a daughter: John L. Rooke, Cottonwood; William I. Rooke, Oreana in Owyhee county; James R. Rooke, Sweetwater; and Mrs. Margaret Jones, Whitebird. Funeral services will be held from the Methodist Church here Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. Arrangements are in charge of the Brower-Wann company. Andrew Burton Rooke resided in Idaho County, IdahoG, on 1 Jun 1880.9 He resided in Cottonwood, Idaho County, Idaho, USAG, on 1 Jun 1900.11 He resided in Cottonwood, Idaho County, Idaho, USAG, on 15 Apr 1910.7 He resided in Cottonwood, Idaho County, Idaho, USAG, on 1 Jan 1920.8 He resided in Cottonwood, Idaho County, Idaho, USAG, on 1 Apr 1930.10
