Iris Gibson killed in three-vehicle crash Saturday east of Mt. Carmel Posted: Monday, Oct 07, 2002 - 12:00:00 am EST A Mt. Carmel woman died -- and four others were hospitalized -- after a wreck on Indiana 64 Saturday, just east of the Wabash River bridge. Iris V. Gibson, 79, was pronounced dead at Deaconess Hospital after 2 p.m. Saturday, after having been flown from Wabash General Hospital. "It is a very sad and shocking situation," said Regional Superintendent Linda Blackman this morning. Gibson had worked for the regional superintendent's office for 23 years. "Our office will miss her... It's a great loss, and we extend our sympathy to her family and friends." Reports from the Gibson County Sheriff's Department indicated the Mt. Carmel woman's vehicle apparently sideswiped a guardrail and crossed into oncoming traffic. Gibson collided head-on, authorities reported, with a vehicle driven by Michelle Holcomb, 33, of Mt. Carmel. An Allendale woman, 21-year-old Amy Pettyjohn, was traveling behind Holcomb and reportedly locked the brakes and swirved to avoide broadsiding Holcomb's vehicle. She was apparently uninjured in the wreck, which occurred at approximately 11:53 a.m., according to authorities. Shirley Williams, 69, of Ponca City, Okla., was a passenger in Gibson's vehicle. She was reported to be in critical condition Sunday night at Deaconess Hospital. A passenger in Holcomb's vehicle, Lee Timberlake, 8, of Mt. Carmel, was in serious condition Sunday at Cosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, Ky. His sister, Aleisha, 13, was in fair condition at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville. Holcomb was also in fair condition at St. Mary's. The accident is still under investigation by Indiana authorities. Gibson's cause of death is being investigated by the Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office. Shirley Ann Tanquary resided in Ponca City, Kay County, Oklahoma, USAG, on 8 Oct 2002.
