Harold C. Ehemann, of Tullahoma, a decorated World War II Navy veteran, died Sunday, May 9, at Harton Regional Medical Center. He was 81 years old. Mr. Ehemann, who retired from Arnold Center in 1984 as an associate engineer, joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served most of the war as an aviation radioman and gunner in a TBF Avenger torpedo bomber. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, May 12, at First United Methodist Church in Tullahoma with Rev. Jim Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. As a member of the Air Group 10 assigned to the USS Enterprise and to the USS Intrepid, Mr. Ehemann saw extensive action in the Pacific from 1942 through 1944. He was awarded the Naval Air Medal for his service and received a citation signed by Secretary of the Navy James Forestal that reads in part: "For meritorious achievement in aerial flight as a radioman of a torpedo bomber in Squadron 10, attached to the USS Enterprise, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of the Marianas Islands in June 1944. Participating in numerous bombing missions against enemy bases and shipping in the face of fierce enemy opposition, Ehemann performed his duties as radar operator with efficiency and, maintaining constant communications under the most difficult and hazardous conditions, rendered invaluable assistance to his pilot in the destruction of enemy aircraft, airfields and military installations in Saipan and Guam and contributed essentially to the success of our amphibious operations in this strategic area. "By his outstanding technical ability, cool courage and unwavering devotion to duty, Ehemann upheld the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service." Born in Deering, Mo., he was the son of the late Charles Christopher and Florence Whelan Ehemann. The family moved in 1926 to Tallulah, La., and then to Mt. Pleasant, Texas, where he graduated from high school in June of 1941 and joined the Navy that July. Following his honorable discharge on Dec. 23, 1945, he returned to Mt. Pleasant to fly pipeline inspection for a pipeline company. After he and the former Billie Sue Tittle were married in 1947, they moved to Tulsa, Oka., where he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics. Following gradu- ation, the couple returned to Mt. Pleasant and also lived in Lone Star, Texas, and San Diego before moving to Manchester, where Mr. Ehemann joined ARO Inc. at Arnold Center. They moved to Tullahoma in 1964 and joined the First United Methodist Church, where they were active in the Crusader's Sunday School Class. Mr. Ehemann is survived by his wife, Billie Sue Tittle Ehemann, Tullahoma; three sons, David L. Ehemann and Mark Ehemann, both of Tullahoma, and Stanley Christopher Ehemann, Dublin, Calif.; two brothers, Marion F. Ehemann, Dallas, Texas, and Edward R.Ehemann, Irving, Texas; one sister, Maria McCubbin, Longview, Texas; and four grandchildren, Lindsay, Kansas City, Mo.; and Chris, Christopher and Henry, all of Tullahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the National Parkinson's Foundation.
